About Hooked on


Hooked on Math is a project from the creators of Hooked on Phonics. It consists of transmitting mathematics as an adventure, using the fun characters that users already know from the Hooked on Phonics app. It is the only application that offers this service for children from 4 to 9 years old.

Thanks to this game, children can discover new faraway lands with the aim of making their way through a curricular adventure based on arithmetic.

The game consists of advancing levels by receiving prizes, so that they can advance in their learning in a subtle and fun way. The game is full of animated music videos and supported by educational videos that help with the explanation of mathematical concepts. Real-time guided feedback ensures that students polish their mathematical skills.


Challenge


In this project I focused on the design of the UX and the UI. This app is focused on children from 4-9 years. It's a moment in life where you change really quickly, so the most challenging part for me was to connect with all the age range and to create activities that engage that range.

We start the game asking the partents some questions about the kid, just to know the level they belong to and to direct them to the activities they should start with, so that way we can cover the whole age range.

We also had to understand that there are a lot of kids of those ages that are still not able to read, so that was also challenging, as we had to use audio as a support, to have both ways of communicating.

In regards to de UI I really enjoyed this proyect, I feel really comfortable when designing in a naive way, so it was a relaxing moment for me when I had to design the assets.
Kids are hard to keep attention from, so I think the visual design for this game is catchy and the characters (that are the same from Hooked on Phonics), help to connect with the user, achieving an emotional feeling with the product.


The Process


This is quite a big project, which contains many levels and therefore organisation is very important.

The team I have worked with on this project has the same dynamics as me, so it has helped a lot in the creation of components.
In my case I have focused more on the UI part of this project, so much of my time dedicated to it, I have invested in the design of the assets, first creating the design in illustrator and finally making the final design of the screens in XD.
